What is a Suspender Belt / Garter Belt?
A suspender belt (known in the US as a garter belt) is a foundation garment that is technically distinct from a corselette or girdle and designed to support hosiery. It is worn around the waist or hips, with straps that clip onto stockings to keep them in place. Typically made from satin, lace, or mesh, suspender belts add both practical support and a dash of old-school glamour to your lingerie drawer.
Why Wear a Suspender Belt?
From function to fashion, wearers still enjoy wearing suspender belts for several reasons:
- Vintage aesthetic: Perfect for fans of 1940s–50s fashion and retro lingerie.
- Eroticism: Stockings & a garter belt are often used for sexual pleasure
- Support Stockings: Many women (and men) wear a garter belt for compression hosiery.
- Practicality: A well-fitted belt and stockings can feel cooler and more comfortable than tights.
- Everyday elegance: They offer a stylish upgrade to your daily underwear.
- Sensual confidence: There’s something empowering about hidden glamour beneath your clothes.
- Special occasions: Ideal for boudoir shoots, bridal lingerie, and romantic evenings.
- Age: Over 65’s may well wear them out of habit, having worn them since they were young.
- Because you like them!: Some women just prefer a nice suspender belt and stockings to tights
How do Suspender Belts Work?
Suspender belts or garter belts, are undergarments designed primarily to hold stockings securely in place. They achieve this through a combination of a main band and adjustable straps with clips which can be plastic or metal.
The main body of the belt is a band of fabric which is worn around the waist or hips. This band can vary in width; for instance, some designs are wide at the front and over the hips, narrowing towards the back.
Fastening: The belt usually fastens with hook-and-eye closures, often offering multiple rows for adjustment to ensure a comfortable and secure fit but you can get styles which ‘roll-on’ or lace up.
Suspender Straps (Garters) attach to the bottom edge of the belt and hang downwards. Belts may come with various numbers of adjustable straps, the most popular being 6.
Clips: At the end of each suspender strap is a clip, made in either plastic or hypoallergenic metal. These clips are designed to securely fasten onto the top band of stockings. Some designs include ribbons over the clips to prevent rubbing and enhance comfort.
Function: Once the stockings are pulled up, the clips are attached to their top edge. The tension from the adjustable straps holds the stockings taut against the leg, preventing them from slipping down and helping to keep any seams straight.
Shaping: While their primary role is to hold hosiery, some suspender belts, particularly those integrated into girdles or made with wider elastic, can also offer a degree of light shaping or tummy control. However, their main purpose remains the secure attachment of stockings.
Types of Suspender Belts
There are many different types of suspender with styles and functions varying widely depending on their construction and intended use.
How many straps a suspender belt / garter belt has significantly impacts its effectiveness in holding stockings and maintaining seam straightness, as well as its aesthetic. Here is a breakdown by the number of straps and their uses:
4-Strap Suspender Belts: Great for occasional, light wear or the bedroom.
- Difference: These typically have straps placed only at the front and back, leaving the sides of the stockings unsupported.
- Use: While they can hold stockings, they are generally less effective for avid wearers as stockings may “droop” at the sides. They are a more basic or less functional option for maintaining perfectly straight seams.
- Tip: If you do opt for a 4 strap, look for wider straps (many have thin flimsy straps with plastic clips) and a wider mid-section which will help with support.
6-Strap Suspender Belts : Ideal for daily use, provide a balance of hold and comfort
- Difference: A more common and effective option as they provide better support for stockings. They are far more likely to offer metal clips and adjusters which are preferable to plastic.
- Use: Considered a “far better option for keeping everything as it should be”, the 6 straps are designed to be stylish, comfortable, and keep seams straight all day long. Many retro styles are inspired by the glamorous 1950s look, sitting firmly around the waist and hugging the hips to create a smooth silhouette.
- Difference: Offer even more support than 6-strap versions, with 8 straps positioned to give a nice smooth look to stocking tops – no dipping or sagging.
- Use: Perfect for ensuring “super straight seams” and are particularly recommended for fully fashioned (FF) stockings, as they help prevent movement.
- Difference: Provide very strong hold, almost like “superglue” for stockings.
- Use: Offer maximum security for stockings, ensuring they stay perfectly in place.
12-Strap (or More) Suspender Belts:
- Difference: Feature a high number of straps for extreme hold and a more intricate appearance.
- Use: These can become “fiddly” and are generally preferred for evening wear or by the fetish community due to their dramatic look and superior hold.
The following table outlines the mechanical and functional shifts across various strap counts in high-quality foundation wear.
| Strap Count | Tension Distribution | Stability Rating | Best Hosiery Match | Best Use Case |
| 6 Straps | Triangulated Support: Evenly spaced (Front, Side, Back) to prevent side-droop. | High | Daily use Lycra or Nylon stockings | Standard daily wear and office attire |
| 8 Straps | Quad-Point Grip: Added points of contact significantly reduce seam rotation. | Professional | Fully Fashioned (FF) Seamed Stockings | Vintage enthusiasts. Those requiring perfectly straight seams |
| 10 Straps | Multi-Anchor Hold: Distributes vertical pull across a wider waistband surface | Maximum | Heavy-gauge or non-stretch nylons. | Active days, dancing, or for those desiring a “”locked-in”” feel. |
| 12+ Straps | Intricate Webbing: Primarily focused on aesthetic complexity and extreme security | Extreme | Fine sheer nylons or boudoir hosiery | Photoshoots, burlesque performances, and fetish aesthetics |
Why Strap Count Matters (The Technical Logic)
- Mechanical Advantage: Each additional strap acts as a new anchor point. In a 4-strap belt, the stocking has two massive gaps on the inner and outer thigh where the fabric can sag. A 6-strap belt closes the side gap, while 8 or 10 straps essentially create a circular grip around the thigh.
- Seam Alignment: Seamed stockings are notoriously difficult to keep straight. The vertical tension from a 4-strap belt is often insufficient to stop the stocking from twisting as you walk. 8 straps provide enough “shear resistance” to keep the back seam vertically aligned with the leg.
- Waistband Integrity: More straps require a deeper, more substantial waistband to handle the cumulative tension. This is why 10 and 12-strap belts are almost always “deep” or “high-waisted” garments that offer secondary benefits like light tummy control and hip smoothing.

Your Results:
| If you answered… | Your Best Match is …. | Why? |
| Mostly A’s | 4 Strap Suspender Belt | Ideal for light use where high-tension support isn’t the priority |
| Mostly B’s | 6 Strap Suspender Belt | The perfect daily workhorse. It offers enough anchors to keep stockings up without feeling restrictive |
| Mostly C’s | 8 or 10 Strap Suspender Belt | Essential for “seam security.” These counts distribute tension so perfectly that your seams stay straight even while moving. |
How many Suspender Straps / Garter Straps do I need?
If you’re wearing stockings all day, 6 or more straps offer the best support. Fewer than that, and you may find slipping or twisting. 8 or more straps are recommended for maximum stability, especially for seamed stockings or vintage nylons.
How many straps do I need for seamed stockings?
We recommend a minimum of 6 straps for daily wear, and preferably 8 to keep seams perfectly straight. With daily activity, dancing, walking ect. there is bound to be some movement and you don’t want to have to keep asking your friends to check your seams.
See above for a breakdown of the numbers of straps and choose how many you need by what you are wearing it for, how long you will be wearing it and your preferred style.
Waist Style:
The width of the suspender belt’s main band can influence its shaping capabilities and aesthetic.
- High-Waisted: Sits either firmly on the waist or just above offering shaping of the waistline, light tummy and hip control, a retro silhouette, and maximum stability.
- Hip-Waisted: Lower cut, flirtier, but may roll if not fitted properly. These are normally the ‘narrow band’ 2 or 4 strap styles. Offer very little support for stockings.

“Of the many different types of suspender belt, a good solid 6 strap is the preferred choice. This one sits firmly on the waist, has 6 wide straps with metal clips and has adjustable hook/eye settings at the back.”
Thin/Narrow Suspender Belts (Garter Belts):
- Difference: These are simple, short belts with attached straps for stockings. They are usually very thin around the waist and offer very basic, light support.
- Use: Primarily used by naturally slim women and teenagers in the 1950s who did not require significant shaping but needed to hold up their stockings. Some styles are designed merely for aesthetic or bedroom appeal rather than functional support.
Wide / Deep Suspender Belts:
Difference: These belts have a wider band and normally sit firmly on the waist (or just above), often extending over the hips and rising at the back. They are generally made with power mesh or a Lycra blend which provides a degree of shaping.
Use: They offer more functional support and can provide some shaping or tummy control. They create a “stronger, bolder look” and are often used for more formal occasions. Swanky Pins offers ‘deep’ styles that are wide at the front and over the hips, designed to be comfortable and sturdy while keeping seams straight.
Fastening Types:
While all suspender belts are primarily used to clip to stockings, the way the belt itself fastens can vary and can make a difference to the way a belt fits.
Hook-and-Eye Fastening: These belts use multiple rows of hook-and-eye closures giving a choice of size settings, often at the back or side, for adjustable and secure fitting.
Zips – The more substantial suspender belts with deep sides or back might feature a metal zip on one side or at the back for easier wear and removal.
Roll-on / Pull on: These are generally lighter weight and not as supportive as those with size adjustments like the hook/eye styles. The waistband has to be slightly looser to enable them to roll over the hips and can move once stockings are attached. Not recommended for male wearers.
Tip: If your weight fluctuates now and again, a hook/eye style is your best choice as you have the option to tighten or loosen the size. This is also the best option for male wearers as they can be adjusted to be tighter at the waist.
How do you Wear a Suspender Belt?
While seemingly simple, a few key steps ensure comfort, a smooth silhouette, and perfectly held hosiery.
Here’s a brief guide:
1. Choose the Right Size and Style: Select a suspender belt that matches your natural waist size. A belt that’s too small will be uncomfortable and unflattering, potentially creating “lumps and bumps,” while one that’s too large will slip, causing your stockings to slide down. Think about the number of straps you need, which may vary according to what you want the garter belt for (see Types of Suspender Belt )
2. Position the Belt: Your suspender belt / garter belt should sit firmly around your natural waist or hips, “hugging” them to create a smooth silhouette under your clothing. Many belts feature hook-and-eye fastenings, often with multiple rows, to allow for a good level of adjustment and a perfect fit. Some belts might also use zips for convenience but you will probably find these are not adjustable making it doubly important to buy the right size.
This gorgeous velvet belt positions just right, firm on the waist with a side opening offering 3 size adjustments. Deep at the sides and front giving a slimming effect. Available in blue, red, turquoise or purple.

3. Decide on Where to Wear your Knickers: You have two main options for wearing your panties (underwear) in relation to the suspender belt which normally boils down to Aesthetics or Convenience:
- Over your Suspender Belt: This is often chosen for a “slaying look” or when the outfit is intended to be removed, as it places the suspender belt as the outermost layer of your intimate apparel.
- Under your Suspender Belt: This can be a more practical option for everyday wear, as it allows for easier toilet access without needing to unclip your stockings.
Personal Opinon: When I go out for a drink I use the toilet A LOT (beer drinker). If you’re like me, I guess it’s better to go for convenience and wear your knickers OVER your suspender belt. However, I believe it the aesthetic appeal is so much nicer when they are worn underneath.
I had a comment from a guy on one of my Insta posts recently (where the model had the belt on top) that it had been worn ‘the wrong way round’ – there is no right or wrong way, it’s entirely up to the person wearing it.
4. Attach Your Stockings Once the belt is comfortably in place, pull on your stockings. Then one by one, attach the top band (welt) of each stocking to the clips at the end of the suspender straps – front first, then sides, then back.
- Adjust the straps: Ensure each strap is adjusted so that it’s taut enough to hold the stocking firmly without tugging at the belt or causing discomfort when you sit down. Straps that are too long will cause stockings to “droop”.
- Clip security: High-quality suspender belts often feature sturdy, hypoallergenic metal clips that snap securely into place, ensuring they only release your stockings when you intend them to. Some may even have ribbons over the clips to prevent rubbing.
- Seam alignment: If you’re wearing seamed stockings, especially with 6 or more strap belts, take care to keep the seams perfectly straight as you clip them. This helps maintain a polished look throughout the day.
By following these steps, your suspender belt will not only keep your stockings perfectly in place but also contribute to a confident and elegant feel.
How to attach a Suspender Belt to Stockings
This is also covered in ‘How do you wear a Suspender Belt’ earlier in the page, but here is a more detailed step by step guide on how to attach stockings to a suspender belt:
Attaching stockings to a suspender belt is a simple process that ensures your stockings stay smooth and secure throughout the day. Follow these steps for a perfect fit:
Step 1: Put on Your Suspender Belt – First, put on your suspender belt. It should sit comfortably around your natural waist or hips, depending on the style.
Step 2: Decide on Where you Will Wear your Panties – Before putting on your stockings, decide if you want to wear your knickers / panties over or under your suspender belt.
Step 3: Put on Your Stockings – Carefully roll up and put on your stockings, pulling them up to your upper thigh. Don’t worry about attaching them yet; just get them positioned on your legs. Tip: Wearing a pair of hosiery gloves will ensure you do not snag your stockings, especially vintage Nylons as these catch very easily.
Step 4: Attach the Front Clips – Starting with the front, take one suspender strap and its clip.
- Locate the stocking welt: The reinforced top band (the welt) of your stocking.
- Open the clip: Open the clip at the bottom of the suspender strap.
- Attach: Place the stocking welt over the rubber nub and then slide into the clip so the rubber bit (with your stocking over it) is securely held. Ensure the stocking fabric is smooth and taut, but not pulling excessively on the belt.
- Adjust strap length: Adjust the length of the suspender strap so that it holds the stocking firmly without causing it to droop or tug uncomfortably when you move or sit.
Step 5: Attach the Back Clips (for 2 or 4 Strap belts). Repeat the process for the back suspender straps. This might require a bit more flexibility.
- Reach back: Reach behind you to grasp a back suspender strap and its clip.
- Attach to stocking: Attach the clip to the top band of the stocking, ensuring the stocking is pulled up smoothly.
- Adjust: Adjust the strap length as needed to maintain even tension with the front straps.
Step 6: Attach Side Clips (for 6+ Strap Belts) If your suspender belt has 6, 8, 10, or 12+ straps, attach the side clips BEFORE the back clips.
- Even distribution: These extra straps provide crucial support, preventing stockings from “drooping” at the sides.
- Seam alignment: If you are wearing seamed stockings, carefully align the seam down the back of your leg as you attach the side and back clips. Belts with 6 or more straps are recommended for keeping seams straight all day long.
Step 7: Final Check Once all straps are attached, stand up and move around. View the back in a mirror to make sure seams (if wearing them) are straight.
- Check tension: Ensure all straps have even tension and that your stockings feel secure without being too tight or causing discomfort.
- Smoothness: Check for any lumps, bumps, or sagging. Adjust strap lengths as necessary to achieve a smooth silhouette.
- Comfort: Make sure the belt itself is comfortable and doesn’t dig into your skin.
With these steps, your stockings will be perfectly attached, providing a smooth line and a confident feel.

What Stockings Work with Suspender Belts?
Suspender belts (Garter Belts) are designed to work with any type of stockings that features a reinforced top band (welt), to which the clips can securely attach. They aren’t specifically made to work with stay-up stockings (stockings with silicone bands) as the silicone may clash with the straps and cause slippage. However, they can work depending on the design of your hold-ups. If there is enough material above the top band, a suspender clip can be attached.

“These 10 denier 100% Nylon stockings with a deep welt at the top are perfect for wearing with a suspender belt, giving a true vintage look.”
Here are the types of stockings that work well with suspender belts:
- Traditional Stockings: This is the primary type of hosiery designed to be worn with suspender belts. They come in various materials and different thickness levels from 8 denier up to 100+.
- Nylon Stockings: These are the classic choice, offering a smooth and elegant look.
- Fully Fashioned (FF) Stockings: These stockings are knitted flat and then seamed up the back, creating a very specific vintage look. They work best with suspender belts that have 8 or more straps to ensure “super straight seams” and prevent movement.
Can you Wear Hold-ups with a Suspender / Garter Belt?
Yes, you can wear hold-up stockings with a suspender belt, although hold-up stockings are designed to stay up on their own using silicone bands.
While a suspender belt isn’t strictly necessary for hold-ups, you might choose to wear one for added security or aesthetic reasons. If you do, you will need one with sturdy metal clips as it can sometimes be difficult to clip through the silicone band of the hold-up stocking.
Some individuals prefer wearing traditional suspender belts even over hold-ups because hold-ups don’t always stay up reliably, and on fuller figures, they can sometimes cut in or roll down the thigh.
Suspender Belts vs Garter Belts
Is there a difference between a suspender belt and a garter belt?
No. “Suspender belt” is normally the British term whereas “garter belt” is the US equivalent. Both refer to the same garment. (Note: “suspenders” in the US generally refer to mens “braces”, and “garters” in some countries can refers to traditional bridal thigh bands, which are decorative and not functional.)
How to Choose the Right Suspender Belt for You
Choosing the perfect suspender belt involves considering your comfort, the type of stockings you’ll wear, the look you want to achieve and when and wear you will wear it. A well-chosen belt will not only keep your stockings perfectly in place but can also enhance your shape under clothing.
When it comes to choosing the right suspender belt, ask yourself:
- Will you wear it daily or occasionally?
- Do you prefer high-waisted vintage styles or a flirtier low-rise cut?
- Are you pairing it with seamed stockings or thicker opaque ones?
- Is it for practical wear, boudoir, or both?
Here’s a short guide to help you make the right choice:
1. Get the Size Right – The most crucial step is selecting a suspender belt that fits your natural waist or hips accurately.
- Fit: It should sit firmly without straining or pressing into your skin. A belt that’s too small will be uncomfortable and unflattering, potentially creating “lumps and bumps,” while one that’s too large will slip, causing your stockings to slide down.
- Adjustability: Ensure the straps are adjustable. If they’re too long, your stockings will droop; if too short, they’ll tug uncomfortably when you move or sit.
2. Consider the Number of Straps – The number of straps directly impacts how well your stockings are held and how straight their seams remain.
- 4-Strap Belts: These have straps only at the front and back. They are generally less effective for avid wearers as stockings may “droop” at the sides but are great for the boudoir.
- 6-Strap Belts: A much better option for keeping stockings supported and seams straight. They are designed to be stylish and comfortable for all-day use.
- 8-Strap Belts: Perfect for ensuring “super straight seams” and preventing any movement, especially with fully fashioned (FF) stockings.
- 10-Strap Belts: Offer a very strong hold, almost like “superglue” for stockings.
- 12-Strap (or more) Belts: These can be more “fiddly” but provide extreme hold. They are often preferred for evening wear or by the fetish community due to their dramatic look and superior hold.
3. Think About Width and Material – The width of the belt and its material can affect both comfort and the overall look.
- Narrow Belts: Primarily fashion accessories, they don’t offer much functional hold, but can be stylish – more suited to the bedroom.
- Wide Belts: Tend to be more functional, offering a stronger, bolder look and some light shaping or tummy control.
- Materials: Modern retro styles use comfortable materials like two-way stretch Nylon Lycra for a flattering fit.
4. Consider the Fastening Most suspender belts use hook-and-eye closures, often with multiple rows for adjustment making them a good choice when you want to ensure everything stays perfectly in place. Vintage styles may have zip fastenings (which won’t allow you any adjustment options) to the side or even a lace-up back.
5. Match Your Style and Occasion
- Everyday Wear: A comfortable 6 or 8-strap belt in a soft, stretchy material is ideal for daily use, providing support and a smooth line under clothing.
- Vintage/Retro Look: Belts inspired by the glamorous 1950s often sit firmly around the waist or just above and hug the hips, creating a lovely silhouette.
- Special Occasions: For a glamorous date night or formal event, consider a lacy or satin suspender belt with more straps for a stunning look.
By carefully considering these factors, you can choose a suspender belt that not only performs its function flawlessly but also makes you feel confident and sensuous.
What are the Best Suspender Belts for Daily Wear?
This is mainly covered in ‘Types of Suspender Belts‘ which goes ‘in-depth into the various types of garter belt so you can see the pros and cons of each style. The best suspender belts for daily wear (in my opinion) would be a deep (meaning wide front & sides) 6 strap. This will stay nicely in place and will offer enough support for your stockings.
- Choose the correct size — snug, but not constrictive.
- Opt for wide belts for better support and smoothing.
- Adjust the strap lengths evenly to prevent tugging.
- You may find it easier to wear your knickers over the belt for convenience if you are going to be wearing it all day.
- Invest in quality — cheaper belts with plastic clips often slip or break.
What is the Correct Position for a Suspender Belt?
The correct position to wear a suspender belt is crucial for both comfort and achieving the desired look. The placement can vary slightly depending on the type of suspender belt and your personal preferences.
General Positioning of a Suspender Belt
A suspender belt (garter belt) is designed to sit around your natural waist or hips. It should feel snug but not uncomfortable, holding firmly without digging into your skin or creating “lumps and bumps”. The goal is to create a smooth line under your clothing and securely hold your stockings in place.
Many retro-inspired styles, particularly those from the 1940s and 1950s, are designed to sit firmly on the waistline (sometimes slightly above) and “hug” the hips, creating a flattering silhouette and a smooth line under clothing.
The position can also depend on the specific type of suspender belt:
Modern” Suspender Belts (Garter Belts):
- How they sit: These are typically worn just below the natural waist or on the hips, aesthetically pleasing maybe, but not ideal for securing stockings. They are often just simple bands, normally lace, with attached straps – usually 2 or 4 and likely to slip down as they have no ‘substance’.
- Use: Ideal for bedroom wear or when you want to hold up stockings for a short period of time.
Wide / Deep Suspender Belts:
- How they sit: These have a broader band that can extend wider at the front and over the hips, usually rising notably at the back. They sit firmly around the waist and hug the hips.
- Use: They offer more functional support and can provide a degree of light shaping or tummy control, creating a “stronger, bolder look”.
Girdle Suspender Belts:
- How they sit: These are much wider than a ‘typical’ garter belt have integrated suspender straps. They sit higher on the body, covering the tummy, hips and bottom, often extending down the thigh.
- Use: Favored by those seeking more comprehensive coverage and a sculpted silhouette for the hips, thighs, and tummy area, while also securing stockings. They are often chosen for their vintage look.
Do You Wear Knickers / Panties Over or Under a Suspender Belt (Garter Belt)?
This is an age-old question that has sparked many a debate in lingerie circles — should you wear knickers (panties) over or under your suspender belt? There is absolutely no single right answer, it all depends on whether your priority is comfort, style or practicality as well as the occasion and the look you wish to achieve.
Here are the pros and cons of each way:
Wearing Knickers Under a Suspender Belt
The suspender belt here is the outermost layer of your lingerie worn directly over your knickers.
Pros:
- Visual Appeal: This is the preferred method if you want the suspender belt to be the main focus. Wearing the belt over your knickers adds an alluring and sophisticated element to your outfit.
- Adjustability: When the belt is worn over your underwear, it allows for easier adjustment of the straps and clips throughout the day. This is convenient if you need to make quick tweaks to your stockings without undressing.
- Seductive look, ideal for romantic settings – Wearing knickers under your suspender belt adds a powerfully seductive look, with straps against bare skin and allowing the straps to lie directly against your skin, uninterrupted by fabric.
- Streamlined fit – Helps the belt sit flush against your waist or hips, especially with corset-style belts.
- Perfect for photography – Creates a clean, uninterrupted line in boudoir or pin-up shoots allowing your suspender belt to take center stage.
Cons:
- Visibility: The straps and clips of the suspender belt may be visible under certain types of clothing, especially tight-fitting or delicate fabrics like lace or sheer materials. While this might be the desired aesthetic for some, you may prefer a more discreet look.
- Convenience: For some, wearing knickers under the suspender belt can be inconvenient for ‘toilet breaks’ as you would need to either unclip your stockings or undo the belt.
Wearing Knickers Over a Suspender Belt
This way places the suspender belt as the base layer with your knickers worn on top.
Pros:
- Bathroom Convenience: This is considered the more practical option for everyday wear. It allows for easier bathroom breaks without the need to unclip your stockings or belt, saving time and effort.
- Seamless Look: Wearing the suspender belt underneath your briefs can provide a smoother, more seamless look, as the belt and clips are concealed. Depending on the type of knickers you wear, this can help prevent the straps from creating visible lines under your clothing. French knickers for instance will normally cover the straps right down to the clips.
- Enhanced Security: From a functional standpoint, wearing your knickers over the suspender belt can offer a more secure hold for stockings (again depending on the style of knickers you choose). The close proximity of the fabric and straps helps keep the stockings in place, preventing them from slipping down during movement.
- Best for everyday wear – Makes toilet breaks quick and fuss-free without unclipping stockings.
- Vintage authenticity – Common in the 1940s–50s for practical daily wear.
- Show off your lingerie – Pretty knickers layered over a belt can create a smooth, polished silhouette.
Cons:
- Adjustability Challenges: It may be slightly more difficult to adjust the straps and clips when the belt is worn underneath, particularly when you’re wearing tight/fitted outer-clothing.
- Visual Concealment: The visual appeal of the suspender belt itself is entirely concealed, which may be a con if you want it to be part of your outfit’s aesthetic appearance.
Which Is Best – Over or Under?
- For practicality → Over
- For seduction → Under
- For layering with sheer knickers → Over (still lets straps show through)
Swanky Pins Tip: Try both and see what works for you – how you wear your lingerie is about fitting around your lifestyle. The choice between these two ways of wearing a suspender belt is a matter of personal preference and depends on a number of factors – your comfort, the circumstances, and the outfit you are wearing with it.
What the Experts (and Stocking Lovers) Say
- Everyday wear → Knickers over for practicality.
- Romantic or playful occasions → Knickers under for maximum impact.
- Photo shoots → Usually under, as it frames the suspender belt beautifully.
Swanky Pins Tip: Overall, we think wearing a suspender belt over your panties looks more elegant, but having said that we do love the gorgeous layered effect of a pair of sheer French knickers worn over the belt where you still see the straps beneath.
Wearing Suspender Belts Under Clothes: Practical Advice
While choosing a suitable suspender belt / garter belt to wear under clothing you do need to give some thought as to the style and fit depending on what clothing you will be wearing. You need to ensure the belt will give you a smooth, elegant shape and be comfortable to wear.
The foundation of a successful look whatever clothing you wear on top is a well-fitting suspender belt. It should feel snug and firm around your natural waist or hips, but never tight enough to be uncomfortable or create “lumps and bumps”.
Hopefully the following practical advice can help you achieve the best results for any occasion.
Suspender belts can be worn under:
- Trousers or jeans
- Pencil skirts
- Fitted dresses
- Flared dresses
Tips:
- Choose flat straps and clips for minimal bulk, especially if wearing under trousers (or for male wearers)
- Stockings should stop mid-thigh — higher may cause twisting under fitted dresses.
- Avoid thick seams or lacy stockings if wearing tight fitting clothing.
The type of clothing you wear will influence your choice of suspender belt.
- For Everyday Elegance: A comfortable 6 or 8-strap belt in a soft, stretchy material is ideal. These provide support and a smooth line under clothing without being restrictive.
- For a Glamorous Date Night: Consider a lacy, satin or boned suspender belt, to add a touch of romance to your lingerie.
- For Special Occasions: A suspender belt with more straps is a more secure option for weddings or other formal events where you could be wearing it all day and into the night as they are less likely to accidentally come undone.
By following these practical tips, you can confidently wear a suspender belt under your clothing, knowing it will provide comfort, a smooth ‘bump free’ silhouette, and the perfect support for your stockings, all while creating a confident, elegant look.
What do I Wear With a Suspender Belt?
Suspender belts pair beautifully with:
- Stockings (of course!)
- Matching Bra & Panties
- High-waisted knickers / panties
- Corsets or girdles for extra shaping
- Vintage style nightwear or robes
Want to channel some 1950s Hollywood glamour? Try seamed stockings, a bullet bra, and a 6-strap satin belt.
A garter belt can also be worn with hold-up stockings although you would need to attach the clips above the silicon strips – or have strong enough clips to secure over the silicon bands.
- With Skirts and Dresses: Garter belts are a classic pairing for stockings when worn with skirts and dresses. The belt sits at your natural waist or hips to prevent it from sliding down as it’s pulled downward by the stockings. For a formal or fitted outfit like a sleek pencil skirt, choose a style that has fairly flat clips so they don’t show through your clothing. For more voluminous garments like a skater skirt, or a vintage style full circle or dirndl dress or skirt, any styles of garter belt can be worn without being visible at all.
- With Trousers: You can wear a suspender / garter belt with trousers for a discreet look – girdles and panty girdles were often used with trousers in the 1950s to achieve a thigh-slimming effect and a smooth line.
- As Part of a Lingerie Set: The garter belt is a key component of a complete and coordinated lingerie set, often paired with matching or contrasting bra and knickers for a unified aesthetic.
Can Men Wear Suspender Belts?
Absolutely — suspender belts are for anyone who enjoys the aesthetic or practicality of stockings. Many men find them:
- Comfortable under trousers
- More breathable than tights
- A way to express vintage style or explore gender-fluid fashion
Inclusivity is sexy. Full stop.
I recently watched a documentary (July ’25) of Kevin Rowland reflecting on his life with Dexy’s Midnight Runners (early 80’s fame for those who may not know him). He is known for discussed his exploration of gender expression and clothing and in it there’s a scene where he’s sitting listening to his version of ‘Reflections of my Life’ looking great in white stockings & a suspender belt.
Men can and do wear suspender / garter belts and the reasons for doing so have evolved from historical practicality to modern-day aesthetics and personal expression.
For Fashion and Personal Expression: While girdles and suspender belts are historically associated with women’s fashion, there is a distinct male market for these items for aesthetic and personal reasons. Swanky Pins explicitly includes “male wearers” in our mission to inspire confidence and glamour and many of our products can be classed as ‘Unisex Foundation Garments‘. This is reinforced by other articles on our site like “Suspender Belts for Men ” and “The Biggest Challenge for ‘Secret’ Cross-Dressers“. Both of these articles cover the subject in more detail and there are lots of comments from male users which you may find interesting.
This highlights a growing trend where men wear traditionally female undergarments as a form of self-expression – whether in private, for photography, or as part of their everyday wardrobe.
Reasons why men Wear Suspender Belts:
These vary from the practical to the deeply personal, but here are the most common:
- Aesthetic Appeal
- Feminine elegance – The intricate lace, satin, and vintage styling can be visually and emotionally appealing.
- Sensual lines – Stockings and suspenders create curves and proportions that some men find beautiful to see and to feel on themselves.
2. Tactile Sensation
- Luxurious fabrics – Soft lace, silky straps, and smooth nylon stockings offer unique textures against the skin.
- Strap movement – The gentle pull of straps and clips adds a sensory element that many men enjoy.
3. Expression of Identity
- Gender exploration – Wearing traditionally “feminine” lingerie allows some men to explore or affirm aspects of their gender expression.
- Personal confidence – Feeling attractive in lingerie isn’t exclusive to women — men often report a boost in self-esteem when wearing it.
4. Practical Function
- Stocking support – For men who prefer stockings to tights, suspenders provide a reliable way to keep them in place.
- Medical or compression hosiery support – Suspenders can be a comfortable, discreet solution for holding up therapeutic hosiery.
5. Connection to Vintage & Pin-Up Culture
- Retro authenticity – Some men are vintage enthusiasts who enjoy the full 1940s–50s look, whether for events, re-enactments, or photoshoots.
- Pin-up fantasy – Wearing vintage lingerie can be part of a playful, theatrical persona.
6. Sensual or Erotic Enjoyment
7. Private indulgence – Many men enjoy the intimate experience for themselves, without any audience.
8. Role play – Suspenders can add spice to romantic scenarios.
What Type of Suspender Belt is Best for Men?
The key to choosing for best type of suspender belt for male wearers is to select a style that suits your body shape, purpose, and comfort level.
1. Fit & Comfort Come First
- Wider belts are better – A belt with a 3–4 inch deep band (or more) will sit more securely and feel comfortable on a male waistline.
- High-waist styles – These provide more coverage and prevent rolling, especially if you’re wearing them for extended periods.
- Stretch panels – Look for a combination of stretch fabrics and firm satin or powermesh for a snug, body-hugging fit.
2. Number of Straps
- Daily wear – 6 straps is the minimum for reliable hold, but many men prefer 8 straps for extra stability.
- For photoshoots, erotisism or vintage events – 6 to 12 straps not only secure stockings but also create a strikingly authentic vintage look.
3. Clips & Fastenings
- Always go metal – Plastic clips can pop open or break under tension, especially on a male thigh.
- Adjustable straps – Ensure there’s enough length to reach comfortably to the tops of your stockings without over-pulling.
4. Choosing the Right Stockings
- Men’s legs are likely to be longer or more muscular, so you may need to:
- Size up for length
- Choose stockings with a bit of stretch, Nylon/Lycra rather than RHT
- Opt for reinforced tops for durability
5. Sizing Tips for Men
- Measure your natural waist — not your hips — to find your belt size.
- If you’re between sizes, size down for a snug fit (especially if your chosen style has quite a bit of stretch – i.e. stretch lace or satin).
- For extra discretion under clothes, choose a smooth satin or figure hugging power-mesh belt rather than lace or styles with embellishments such as bows.
6. When to Consider a Girdle or Corselette Instead
If you want a suspender function plus tummy control or a fully smooth line under clothing, a vintage-style girdle or corselette can be a great alternative. Many men find them easier to wear for longer periods.
*Swanky Pins Tip: All the same principles apply whether you’re choosing a suspender belt for yourself or buying one as a gift for a partner – but if you’re a man wearing them daily, prioritise comfort, stability, and high-quality clips above all.
Where Can I Buy Suspender Belts / Garter Belts for Men?
When I started Swanky Pins, I had no idea that Garter Belts were so popular with male wearers – a ‘speciality niche’ that I hadn’t initially considered. As time has gone on (13 years now), I would estimate that at least 40% of our customers are men – buying for themselves.
We understand that it is difficult for a man to walk into a lingerie shop, but with so many styles available online, men can now try on lingerie in the comfort of their own home with no ‘face to face’ potentially embarrassing moments.
Flimsy lace bands, or those with 4 thin straps or plastic clips are never going to be supportive enough for a male wearer, so if you are looking to buy suspender belt/garter belts for men to wear with confidence we suggest you do a bit of research into styles and sizing first. (see Best Type of Suspender Belt for Men).
Several online retailers and platforms cater to it for aesthetic and personal reasons. Of course we would recommend our own online shop, we have gained a lot of insights from our male customers over the years and feel we offer a varied mix of styles that are suitable for male wearers.
Why not check out our range of suspender belts?
Also look at lingerie shops that:
- Offer inclusive sizing
- Have elastic, stretchable fits
- Prioritise comfort over dainty styling (or both, if that’s your thing!)
- Many belts are unisex in design — what matters most is sizing and fit.
- Marketplaces like Ebay and Amazon also have a wide range of styles listed by various sellers but if you want a bit of advice before buying your garter belt, we would recommend a dedicated lingerie shop.
Where Can I Buy Suspender Belts for Larger Ladies?
Many brands now offer plus size suspender belts in sizes up to UK size 24 and beyond — but not all are created equal.
For plus-size women, choosing a garter belt requires careful attention to both fit and style to ensure comfort and a flattering look. The goal is to find a belt that provides security for your stockings without digging into your skin or creating an unflattering silhouette.
To ensure you get the best fit, it’s essential to take accurate measurements and be mindful of how the garment is designed to sit on your body. Measure your natural waist, not your hips, as this is typically where garter belts are worn. When ordering, use this measurement to compare with the sizing chart provided by the seller.

We think this is a great suspender belt for plus size ladies, or those carrying that little extra bit of weight on the hips or belly. Made in a firming power-mesh, it sits just above the waist with light boning to keep shape. 6 suspender straps with sturdy metal clips.
Look For:
- Wide waistbands (for comfort and support) A wider band provides a better anchor for your stockings and can have a light shaping effect on the waist and hips
- 6+ straps (better hold on curves)
- Strong metal clips
- Soft stretchy sturdy materials that don’t roll or pinch (Modern retro styles often use two-way stretch nylon Lycra for a flattering and comfortable fit.)
Where to Buy a Plus-Size Garter Belt
Finding a suspender (garter) belt designed for a plus-size fit can be done through a variety of retailers:
- Marketplaces: Websites like Etsy and eBay are excellent resources, as many sellers offer a wide range of options, including both new and vintage garter belts in plus sizes.
- Specialty Lingerie Retailers: Some brands specialize in vintage-inspired lingerie and offer plus-size options. Some of the bigger chains such as Debenhams in the UK are also now stocking a small range of retro lingerie.
- Other Online Stores: You may also find plus-size options on other specialty websites that offer brands like Rago which can go up to 8XL for taller or larger ladies.
A good lingerie site / seller will give precise waist measurements for suspender belts. Sizes XL, XXL ect. are not ‘real sizes’ and the actual waist measurement can differ by many inches depending on where they are made. You may buy a 4XL from a seller on Amazon which will have a different ‘actual’ measurement from a lingerie retailer.
At Swanky Pins our collection includes vintage-inspired belts for ‘plus size’ ladies with inclusive sizing and practical design for everyday wear. Always check the description area of the product for waist measurements.
What type of Suspender Belt do I need for Compression/Support Stockings?
If you wear support or compression stockings, regular suspender belts may not do the trick. You’ll need:
- Heavy-duty straps and reinforced clips
- A strong waistband that won’t shift with movement
- Preferably 6–8 straps to distribute tension evenly
Look for medical wear suppliers or specialty lingerie brands that cater to function and form — a niche, but growing, market.
We have already written a comprehensive article that’s worth reading regarding this subject with some interesting comments from both men and women who wear them.

How Do You Keep Stockings Up Without Suspenders?
If suspenders aren’t your style, here are some options:
- Hold-ups / stay-ups: Stockings with silicone bands — easy, but may slip on some skin types
- Garter / Suspender tights: Tights that are designed to mimic the look of tights with an attached suspender belt, but all-in-one
- Garters: Elastic bands worn above the knee (more decorative than functional)
- Shapewear with clips: Bodysuits or girdles that incorporate suspender functions
That said — if you love a proper vintage look, a ‘true’ suspender belt win every time!
Why Are Metal Suspender Clips Better Than Plastic Ones?
The key to a comfortable, reliable suspender belt is in the clips.
Metal clips:
- Stay fastened securely
- Don’t break under tension
- Handle daily wear better
- Work with heavier stockings or fully fashioned styles
Plastic clips:
- Tend to snap or slip
- May not grip thicker stockings
- Are often used in decorative, non-functional belts
Pro tip: If you’re serious about wearing suspenders — go metal, always. Metal clips are better all rounders than plastic ones.
Why Don’t Women Wear Suspenders Anymore?
Well, many still do. We have found that a lot of older women (and men) in particular have worn suspender belts and girdles since they were teenagers and often refer to an ‘addiction’ to them – but here’s why they fell out of the mainstream:
- The 1960s brought nylon tights, seen as more modern and convenient
- Fashion shifted toward casual wear and fewer layers
- Suspenders were viewed as too “sexy” for daily wear
But times have changed again and women ARE wearing suspenders.
With a renewed love of retro / vintage styles, fashion, and personal expression, suspenders are making a comeback — not just as lingerie, but as a statement of confidence and femininity (regardless of gender).
How to Care for Your Suspender Belt
Caring for your suspender (garter) belt will keep your belt looking lovely and lasting longer:
Washing:
- Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent. Most belts these days can be washed in a machine on a 30 degree was with no spin. Using a laundry bag will help it keep shape.
- If the suspender straps are removable, take them off and hand wash them.
- Avoid bleach or fabric softeners
- Rinse gently and do not wring
Drying:
- Lay flat to dry — no tumble dryer!
- Keep away from direct heat or sunlight
Storing:
- Hang or fold carefully to avoid twisting so the straps stay flat.
- Keep clips fastened to prevent wear on elastic
A little care goes a long way in keeping your suspender belt elegant and wearable for years to come.
Where Can I Buy a Suspender Belt in the UK?
There are many places you can buy a suspender belt in the UK – but where you look depends on the style you are after. There are high street shops where you can get ‘modern’ 4 strap lacy belts that provide minimal support and are more suited to the bedroom, but if you are looking for something more substantial there is far more choice online.
If you’re UK-based, you’re in luck — there’s a thriving retro lingerie scene with suspender (garter) belts based on vintage styles available from specialist online shops. Look for retailers that offer:
- UK sizing and delivery
- Quality construction (metal clips, sturdy elastics)
- Good customer service (advice is often needed for sizing ect.)
- Trusted reviews
